Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopment disorder where the brain's neurotransmitter chemicals noradrenaline and dopamine do not work properly . The main characteristics of this disorder is presence of symptoms such inattention , impulsivity and/or hyperactivity.
Noradrenaline plays a critical role in high-level cognitive functions such as working memory and inhibitory response control . Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with motivation, pleasure, attention, and movement .
There is no clear answer of what is causing ADHD . However World Health Organization suggests that the following factors can have a role:
Genetics
Having a significant traumatic experience as a child
Being born prematurely
A possible brain injury
Environment toxic conditions
Bad healthy habits during pregnancy
An individual not diagnosed who is suffering from this disorder, and is not receiving the proper treatment may have strong complications and negative consequences in his life. However it is important to highlight that when the right treatment is applied an individual can live a happy and successful life.
ADHD is a disorder that can co-exist to a greater or lesser degree, with any or other disorders such as dyslexia, autism, learning disorder, dyspraxia, conduct disorder, oppositional defiant disorder.
